    저자들은 과학의 본성을 종합적으로 그리고 상세히 알려주기 위해 이 책을 집필했다. 과학지식의 구성요소와 각 요소의 본질적 속성, 과학적 방법의 발달과 그 종류 및 한계, 그리고 과학기술과 사회의 관계 및 과학윤리를 특별히 자세하게 제시했다. 아마도 인식론ㆍ형이상학ㆍ논리학ㆍ윤리학ㆍ과학철학의 관점에서 보면 이 책의 구조와 내용이 어쭙잖아 보일 수도 있을 것이다. 그러나 저자들은 그런 인식의 가능성을 감안하면서, 과학철학의 전문적 용어보다는 과학적 연구 또는 과학적 탐구 상황에 친숙한 용어로 내용을 기술했다. 과학의 본성에 관심이 있는 독자들이 좀 더 편안하게 받아들일 수 있게 하기 위해서였다.
